The Retinal Acuity Meter (RAM) is a sophisticated handheld device used at our Mumbai facility to assess macular function behind cloudy media, such as a dense cataract or posterior capsular opacification.

Introduced to help surgeons give a more accurate estimate of postoperative acuity, this potential acuity assessment is crucial for managing patient expectations. Predicting visual outcomes helps avoid unrewarding surgeries and ensures patients are happy with their results.

The RAM device is especially useful in patients who have more than one cause of decreased vision. For example, if a patient has a cataract plus a macular disease (e.g., Diabetic Retinopathy, Epiretinal Membrane, or Macular Degeneration), it is often hard to determine whether the visual loss is due to the cataract alone.

The RAM allows us to predict postoperative visual acuity with high accuracy, providing useful data prior to cataract surgery or Nd:YAG Laser Capsulotomy.
