Screen Time and Kids' Eye Health

Protecting Your Child’s Eyes in a Screen-Filled World

In today’s tech-savvy world, screens are everywhere — from tablets and smartphones to smart TVs and e-learning tools. While these devices offer incredible learning opportunities, prolonged screen use can affect your child’s developing eyes and overall vision health.

At Trivision Eye Care and Lasik Center, we care deeply about your child’s eyesight. Our pediatric eye specialists share key insights and practical tips to help you strike a healthy balance between technology and vision care.

The Impact of Smart Devices on Young Eyes

1. Increased Risk of Digital Eye Strain

Children often use screens at closer distances and for longer periods than adults, leading to eye fatigue, dryness, blurred vision, and even headaches.

2. Disruption of Normal Eye Development

Extended near work and limited outdoor time can increase the risk of myopia (nearsightedness), which is now rising globally — especially in children.

3. Poor Posture and Lighting

Children may not realize they are too close to a screen, using it in dim lighting or at odd angles — all of which strain their eyes and body.

Smart Habits for Healthier Vision

👁️ Follow the 20-20-20 Rule: Every 20 minutes, ask your child to look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This helps relax eye muscles and reduces fatigue.

📏 Maintain Proper Distance: Devices should be held at least 18–24 inches from the eyes, and screens should be positioned slightly below eye level.

🌳 Encourage Outdoor Play: Just 1–2 hours of outdoor activity daily has been shown to lower the risk of myopia. Sunlight and looking at distant objects are vital for eye development.

🔆 Adjust Screen Brightness: Match screen brightness to the surrounding environment. Avoid high contrast and use blue light filters in the evening.

🛏️ Avoid Screens Before Bed: Blue light exposure before bedtime can affect sleep quality. Turn off devices at least 1 hour before sleep.

When to See an Eye Doctor

Early eye check-ups are important — even if your child isn’t complaining. Watch for signs like:

  • Squinting or rubbing eyes
  • Sitting too close to screens or books
  • Frequent headaches
  • Tilting the head to see better
